I have definitely thought about doing it through the park but the past three years haven't been very conducive to skiing in the park, at least when I was there. For what ever reason, the landscape to the east of Grand Marais has always had a decent amount of skiable snow even when the rest of the UP was relatively dry. I am up to modifying the trip if people are up to it. As it stands right now, I have the week of Feb 16-23 scheduled for the ski trip,
My original reasoning for a Tahq Falls to Grand Marais was:
1. The reliability of snow as well as this being the inaugural run I wasn't sure how much mileage we would be able to log daily, depending on the mood of 'Gitche Gumi'. As you may recall a certain trip last year Ike, breaking trail in the deep white was a ball buster.
2. Last winter, Kev and I received a right and proper beatdown by the winds howling off the lake. They were relentless and frigid, the entire trip.
3. The days in the winter up there are pretty short. Wasn't sure how much people would want to ski in the dark. I have no problem with it.
If we get a core group of skiers together that want to make the trip together we should get some type of consensus. I am definitely not opposed to skiing the park. I am looking for a little bit of Type 2 fun to shake off the winter doldrums. In addition, I am hoping to test out my latest Christmas gift on this trip... the Alpina Alaska NNN BC ski boots.
As it stands right now, I am thinking about heading north on Saturday to dump a vehicle or two at the end stage (either Grand Marais or Munising) and start of either Sunday or Monday morning, this of course is not set in stone.
Hopefully you and Dan D. can make this work... should be a killer 'local' trip.
