Can't help you. I only have 2 tents and am currently poor too.

Goodluck and I hope she enjoys camping enough to get her out there. I guess u can fall back on walmart. 30 bucks and under 6 lbs. but I'd hold out for a freebie first!

I can send you a tent. It's a Taymor Hostler from '89 or so with all accessories (stakes and poles). I haven't taken it out of the stuff sack in years, but I see it every day in the garage and wonder what to do with it. The PU coating may be a little sticky, but the netting was all intact last time I pitched it. It was less than four lbs to the best of my recollection and wide enough for two with enough length for extra gear.

It's similar to an old North Face Bullfrog, but larger. Integrated fly, not free standing. Airy with the fly pulled back.

Yes, college is expensive because......Republicans!

If only we could raise taxes on the rich college could be free for everyone. And healthcare too. And phones and rent and food.

I have a one person to donate, but not a triplex. Maybe we could put his girl in the solo :)

Man, with that list of creepy-crawlies, I would be in a hock every time!

My wife had done the Wonderland Trail and traversed the Olympics before we met, not to mention going to China just a little after Nixon did. Kinda nice to have that intro to the wilderness out of the way.

After we married I was consolidating our gear-- we had a pile of packs, tents, sleeping bags and cook pots. One of her pots had these weird dents in them and I asked about them. A bear had decided to clean them a little more thoroughly and left a few tooth marks.....

Other than Top Ramen, peanut butter and Krusteze pancake mix were big on my college grocery list. The cheap shelter alternative was a tube tent. You haven't lived until you've spent a night in a tube tent in PNW weather. Can you say, "condensation"? I knew you could!

At least I could afford to fill up my $300 '61 Impala with 35.9/gallon gas :)

OMG, the memories. In the Fall of 1972 there was a huge protest at my community college because they raised the full time tuition to $75 a quarter. I rented a 2 bedroom 2 bath 1200sf apartment for $175 with a room mate and we were outraged when they raised it to $200. Then again, minimum wage was $1.75/hour.

I even remember when the price of gasoline topped 30 cents per gallon. I wondered how I would make it through another semester.

Helping our fellow humans when they are in need has merit, but before you donate your tent you may want to read this thread.

Michael, I was the one who made the wise acre comment about Republican boomers, not Dan.

And yeah I worked every semester of college and still had to take out loans. I ended up owing $3,000.00 and thought it was the end of the world. Students today also work while attending classes and end up owing many tens of thousands of dollars--way, way above the rate of inflation. It's not the way it was for the boomers.

yes, that i agree with!

a mix of hendrik and that guy from hawaii.

and sit back and watch the tent dollars roll in.

either that or get a random job for one day on the weekend doing yardwork, make $80, and buy a used coleman tent on craigslist.

Oh the humanity... or lack thereof? on 08/03/2013 17:53:56 MDT Print View

Thanks for those who helped and had some concern of my situation - seriously thank you, your words and thoughts mean a lot. You are the minority here it seems.

To the others....Give it a rest people. I get it, "work harder, get a job." "Hey, let's mock him and tell him to start a kickstarter... that would be Hi-lar-i-ous!" I wasn't asking on how to make money or make a living - your thoughts don't apply with my life and I don't appreciate being insulted directly when I have not said an ill word of anyone here. God forbid you people ever need help. I'm sure you would just wither away and die, rather than ask for a hand, right?

Yes, this is me being smug, Hoot. A person can only take so much before the positive nature is penetrated.

Funny how years ago that Don guy asked for an entire camping setup for two and there was a line of people fighting to help him.

Now Dan, a proven 'nice guy' needs help with just a tent and everybody's all butt-hurt about it?!?

This site is done.

Speaking of Don...

His thread got its share of jeers too, actually. But I think it worked out in the end. Some members gave while others loaned. I believe Don returned everything that was loaned to him.

well, read the end of this thread. even if you believe he returned or donated to charity every piece of gear that folks gave him, and only was selling items he purchased himself (hmmmm), he definitely defrauded a number of BPL people out of money in the end.

Regarding the thread posted above relating to the OP selling a piece of gear given to the him- that was as stated here certainly a bit of a "hmmm". And then seeing in that same listing thread he just now went back yesterday ( 8/3/2013) and edited some of his posts in that old thread did not exactly show a lot of ethics or class. Not after he is somewhat called out on it and then to go change posts in a almost 2 year old thread.

One of the edited posts states: "bad omens...."

Which does seem prophetically appropriate.

I have a two person Hi Tec you can have. You'll need a single trekking pole to set it up. It hasn't been seem sealed yet.

I'll cover shipping. Let me know.

Edit: Shelter is about 2.5 lbs without pole or stakes.
