Looks like I might have a weekend without the wife and baby over Labor day, so I was thinking of going backpacking or fishing. Then I thought, golden trout are on my bucket list, so maybe I can do both?!
Does anyone have any experience/suggestion for golden trout fishing? Am I pretty much limited to the golden trout wilderness? I've read that there is a lake or two out of mineral king that hold golden trout, but I'd like to go somewhere that will give me the best oportunity to catch some.
I would also like to make it a good backpacking trip as well, so I'd prefer not to be on a dirt "pedestrian highway" to the most well know golden trout spot in the world. Especially being a holiday weekend, there will be more people out than normal.
Also, keep in mind I need time to fish so I'll need to keep it under 10 miles, preferably 6. Unless I make it a 3 day weekend, then I can do 10 miles in and out and just hang out and fish the second day, maybe some short day hikes to other water.
If I can't find any good suggestions I guess I'll just try and do a loop in Desolation.
P.S. I'm coming from the SF south bay area. And, being slow and out of shape, 10 miles is the longest day I've hiked, and it was litterally sun up to sun down for me.
