Flew from Seattle down to Phoenix for a quick weekend trip May 17. Joined the guys for a 2.5 day backpack on the Highline Trail along the Mogollon Rim outside of Payson. The trail end to end is 52 miles. We did 13 miles from 260 Trailhead to Horton Creek for the first night, 20 miles from Horton Creek to Washington Park day 2 and then the 19 miles out to the Pine Trailhead the last day.

It was a great trip, cool scenery, awesome weather with temps in the mid-80's, and abundant water. Saw a few elk and almost got blasted by a black rattler. Also went face first over a log on the trail and snapped one of my LT4's :(

Enjoy...

Looks like the perfect time. Assume it was a shuttle hike? Approximately what time (morning, noon, etc..) did you see the snake pictured above?

Yes we had a car at both ends. The shanty looking restaurant just a 1/2 mile down the highway from the Pine TH is really good!

Saw the snake at around 2pm. Loud and proud.

Thanks for the the trip report and pix.

Did a a good chunk of that trail and few other popular trails along the Rim last year, around the same time.

A great place to hike in the spring. I hope to spend more time hiking the area in the near future.
