I prefer to go by myself. When I see an area of interest and want to dedicate extra extra time, a buddy might see it as wasting time. Or the opposite, on another solo trip, I had just gotten a dog, he was at home with the Mrs, I missed the dog terribly, though not my wife :) so I abandoned the trip at the end of day 1,returned home to play with the dog. If I was with a trail buddy, I would have stayed the course, but my heart was still at home with the pup.
These days the Mrs and my extended family (all of which are not outddor types) give me a lot of shizer when I go solo. So I am making an effort to expand my horizons and share my fav areas with new recruits.
My go-to bp buddy for 25 years is depreciating in value. His wife makes things difficult with manipulation, that I find these days I don't want to even go hiking with him, to avoid her static. He married her, not me, but her chaos spills over to me and thats a mountain high buzz kill. I dont want to change people, or fix their behavior problems, I just want to enjoy the trees without the nuissance. Sadly, my long time friend is the collateral damage. To avoid his wife's intrusion and nagging, I gotta avoid him too.
Perfectly happy with solo. But to keep my family from worrying needlessly, I grab a +1.
