Lycra Mesh Pocket Elastic?

In the G4 pack instructions they have a 1/8 shock cord wrapped in a lightweight fabric as the mesh pocket elastic. I'm not 100% convinced of this idea, and I'm wondering how the Lycra Mesh that I have would do as an elastic instead. I'd fold it over the edge of the mesh and, I would think it would have enough stretch.

Has anyone tried this? Any thoughts?

I haven't tried this but I've made two packs with shock cord and I've liked that set-up. One advantage that I like is that I can replace that cord years down the road if it loses it's stretch but it'd be harder to do if it were sewn on Lycra mesh.
