Hmmmmm.
People also use the terms "Cascades" and "Rockies". I think it would sound funny to say I'm going to hike in the Cascade or Rocky.
Perhaps the plural is used to address the multiple peaks and mountains within the ranges?
People don't say "I'm heading to the Rainiers." when referring to Mt Rainier because it is one mountain. (Except in a very old Running The Rainiers beer commercial.)
If we resolve this we can then address the very important "Smokey Bear"/"Smokey The Bear" issue.
