Better deal than Downlight Hoodie on 02/14/2013 16:09:30 MST Print View

I'm looking to get my girlfriend a midweight down hoodie for a upcoming trip to Canada and subsequent backpacking trips with some friends. She's not a fan at all of the Michelin Man look, but I don't think there's anything out there warmer for the weight than a down jacket. I figure she can wear her shell over it in public and when backpacking the look won't matter too much anyway.

Does anyone know of a better deal going right now than the First Ascent Downlight hoodie on sale now for $99-$119?

Insulation only? on 02/14/2013 21:03:50 MST Print View

Patagonia had some nice insulated shells for $120 (from $299). They might be a better deal. How cold is it going to be? Are you looking for insulation or an insulated shell?

Thanks,

I checked Patagonia's site and didn't see anything in her size (S), but appreciate the info.

It's probably going to be highs in the 30s lows in the teens. My relatives up there probably have some heavy insulated jackets she can borrow when needed.

I'm looking more for a insulation layer that she can wear under a shell primarily for backpacking.

However if there's a great deal for a jacket with a shell that isn't an anchor, I think that would be fine too.

Patagucci down sweater on 02/15/2013 13:22:32 MST Print View

How about the patagonia down sweater? My girlfriend has one and she wears it all the time and it looks pretty cool. Patagonia has become a bit of a fashion brand so they are fine to wear out in public too. Plus they use some recycled materials, have good warranty dept and are well made.

Depending on her size and colour preference:

$99 black http://www.basegear.com/patagonia-down-sweater-womens-f12.html

$124 http://www.o2gearshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=48233

$122 http://www.o2gearshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=63939

You can get it cheaper if you get moosejaw.com or backcountry.com to pricematch and then pay with discover (you need to use the link on the discover website) to get 10% cashback.

Thank you guys so much for all of your insight. I ordered a downlighting anyway and will see what she thinks. She is really particular about the jacket being long enough (read: extra long) and the tall option intrigued me. Eddie Bauer is so good about returns anyway.
