I presume that such as myself there are some fellow map afficianados here on BPL. And as such there are also probably some fans of Google Earth. I haven't personally viewed via Google Earth the new features discussed in the article but I bet it will become a nice feature as people get to entering their own data into it.

I'd be interested in people posting links to their own .kmz files that they've added to Google Earth in terms of hiking trails, good vistas, et al.

I was a bit suprised more people weren't interested in this. I'm trapped in the city and in front of computers for a good number of hours every week. Google Earth is a great way for me to be able to travel in my mind.

This will give you a chuckle!

1. go to www.maps.google.com
2. click on "get directions"
3. type "New York" in the first box (the "from" box)
4. type "London" in the second box (the "to" box)
5. scroll down to step #23

Its only 3462 miles...

Actually, I just got around to reading the blog and figuring out how to enable the trail layer.
Its pretty neat, it has cool pictures and directions to the trailheads. If you get zoomed in close enough it gives you more detailed information about the trail too (at least the one's in Missouri that I've looked at). It definitely looks like something I will kill time on. Thanks a lot for posting, I never would have known about it otherwise.

I used it for my Nepal trip this May - Visually, it really gives me a good idea of the elevations invlolved.

In general, Google Earth is like a peak baggers dream. The ability to "fly" in and see your planned route without having to mentally extrapolate that visual picture from a topo is HUGE.
