If anybody is interested in one of the Midwest's hidden gems for backpacking, I have posted photos from two trips to Pukaskwa National Park, Ontario, Canada as well as a recent trip to the Chicago Basin in the Weminuche Wilderness Area of western Colorado.

You can check them out at:

Pukaskwa has just made my must see list. I'm fast becoming a Superior Shoreline addict. The photography, particularly on the first Pukaskwa trip and the Chicago Basin is phenomenal, and I felt like I learned a lot about composition just looking through them.

On an unrelated note, you always look so serious in your pictures. I didn't expect you were going to be so lighthearted in person.

Both my dad and I have been told we look like undertakers in photos. I think it has more to do with the fact that I forget to take a photo of myself until the end of the hike during the day.

Thanks for the fine compliments. The only piece of advice I would give regarding photography is this: Lighting and Lines.

Find the best natural lighting in the environment. Either back or side lighting is the best. Once you have found the best angle of light then compose. Frame the lines in your composition to lead the viewer's eye THROUGH the photograph. Point A to Point B kinda thinking. This will allow you to control where the viewer looks in the photograph rather than the viewer just quickly glancing at the photo and saying 'that's nice'. 90% of photography is done before the camera is taken out of the bag.

As far as Superior is concerned, it is the center of the universe. Dan Durston is planning what could be the best Superior adventure. To packraft down the Pukaskwa River to Lake Superior and then hike the coastal trail up to the trail head. Sounds incredible. If I can pull off a packraft that is first on my to do list.

Another winter trip I have been thinking about is skiing the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park on the North Shore.

If you decide to go to Pukakswa and want company let me know.

Thanks for the photos. I love the midwest, the dry air and vast landscape. Thanks.
