I reconnected with friends, and gained new ones, for a return trip into the Pecos Wilderness in NM this past June. Once again our original plans to explore the canyons of the Gila Wilderness were obliterated, literally, by the state's largest wildfire in history. Far away from the dust and brimstone that fell on the land of the Gila, the Sangre de Cristos were prime for some late spring rambling. We struck north once again for some high country.

Usually one for words, often too numerous, I thought I would just share photographs from our trip and leave it at that.

Looking forward to the next one.

Trip reports like this always depress me since I like in Nebraska and the mountain are so far away. I just have to live vicariously through all of you out west.

Pecos Wilderness?

Awesome pictures. I particularly liked the goat herd and the two mountain pictures that followed.
I'd love to hear about the trip highlights at some point.

Really nice to see your trip, Eugene. The friend cooking in the Caldera Cone looks for all the world like the guy who does the tv show Survivorman.

I sorta' like the break from tradition and doing an all-photo TR. At the same time though, my curiousity is itching to know about the title of the thread and how exactly that fits into the story... Too obscure of a reference to leave us hanging like that!

Excellent photos Eugene! The beautiful silver tones come through even on the internet. Bold move doing all black and white and it really worked. I like the close ups that sometimes go abstract because of the focus.

WOW!! Terrific pictures, Eugene. I'd say The Sangre de Cristos are a pretty darn good consolation prize.

These are fun to put together. I had been sitting on this album of photographs for months now, with a draft typed out, but just couldn't formulate the experience into words naturally. No need to spell it all out. In short, it was exactly the fulfilling trip we all wanted and more. No pressure, no schedules, no high expectations. Honest fellowship and self propelled exploration through a beautiful swath of wilderness.
