I am after a hammock for car camping and home use so weight is totally irrelevant. What is relevant is ease of use and mosquito and rain protection. I know a lot of the hammocks here are ultralight things and I was wondering if there is a whole new category of hammock manufacturers when weight is not an issue?

You might want to check out Hammock Forums.com While there are a number of backpackers on that forum, there are also a lot of car campers and others that aren't as obsessed with weight factors, and you can learn more than you ever thought you wanted to about hammocks :-)

Generally, though, if you're looking for ultimate comfort, I'd recommend either the Dream Hammocks Dangerbird (the 11-foot-version):

Both are INCREDIBLY comfortable and have built-in bug protection. The styles are a bit different - the Dream Hammock is a gathered end (more traditional) and the RidgeRunner is a bridge hammock. Generally speaking, most find the RidgeRunner to be a bit more comfortable, but may not choose it due to the weight penalty of the poles. Again, if using it at home/car camping, though, it's not an issue. You really can't go wrong with either choice.


As far as tarps, if weight isn't a concern, it's tough to beat a Warbonnet Superfly. Tons of coverage, closable doors and a decent price:
