This was a 7 day documentary from CBC reporter Mark Kelly

"Episode 5, March 28, 2007.
Mark Kelley spends seven days on British Columbia's 77-kilometre West Coast Trail."

I liked Mark's short, pointed comment when he first picked up his pack. The trail looks great. Thanks for posting this.

West Coast Trail - Ultralight Tips? on 05/06/2007 21:57:21 MDT Print View

I'm hoping to get a reservation to do the WCT this year.

I've been ultralight hiking for several years now (my gearlist at http://www.brettonstuff.com) but haven't done any beach hiking or very sustained mud hiking in my trail runners.

I notice everyone wearing mud-clad heavy boots and gaiters on the WCT pictures!

I'm wondering how my ultralight trail runners will perform on all the sandy beaches and deep mud. Any pearls of wisdom from ultralight folks that have done this trail (or any other beach hiking) in trail runners.

thanks for any info!

Hey Brett,

I've been lucky enough to hike the WCT twice now and the root cause for all injuries that I've seen has been footwear. The worse selections usually being too little support which has resulted in bum knees and ankles. I did check out your gear list, your are no doubt an expert, however, my experience says you need more.

Cheers,
Sean

I would definitely wear trail runners. Boots are forbidden on this website...lol

I had no problems in my montrail hardrocks. I brought along a pair of crocs for water crossings, but really didn't end up needing them.
