Douglas, those are some happy looking snow walkers you've got there. Hope you get to take your remaining dog out this winter.

Here's the most recent good picture I have of Hysson, a 3/4 Lab, 1/4 Golden Retriever who is a "release" dog from Canine Companions for Independence. This was taken several years ago in Wyoming's Wind River Range. I need to take some more pictures, since he's going on 11 years old so probably won't be around for many more years. He certainly doesn't think he's an old dog, though; half the time he thinks he's still a puppy! We did have a big scare last summer when his blood tests showed his kidneys were starting to go. Fortunately, after getting him on a lower protein diet (primarily adding cooked rice and veggies to his kibble), his kidneys are back to normal.

When he reaches his 11th birthday, since one dog year is equivalent to 7 human years, both of us will be the same age!In Marm's Lake, Wind River Range, WY

Mary, Hysson is adorable.

And he's lucky to spend his golden years with someone who cares for him.

This here is Bixby. 100 lbs of mischief and entertainment. We think he's mostly yellow lab and around 4 now. We bailed him out of doggie jail a little over three years ago.

Thank you all so much for posting. I had not checked this thread in almost a week and was happy to see so many more responses.
Tonight I left Luna in her crate while my girlfriend and I went out for dinner. We came home and my roommate had her out and her tail seems to be either dislocated or broken. He has no clue what occurred (he's not someone who would hurt an animal and was just as upset as us). She doesn't seem to be in horrible pain but looks like I'll be visiting the vet come Monday ($250 extra if I take her on Sunday unfortunately).
Anyway, the pics of your kids made my night. Thanks :)

William, what a great action shot! And a very pretty dog.

@ Daniel: has Luna's tail seen any cold water recently? When my dog's tail area gets hit by cold water (usually from a river), her tail will some times seem "broken" for a couple days afterwards. It stays down and rarely wags, but it doesn't seem to bother her much. After a few days, it's back to normal. My vet says there's nothing I can do about it besides wait it out.

John,
Thank you for getting me through the door on researching this. It was cold and rainy here last night. I think this is what happened since she is already showing signs of healing. Strange condition! I'm glad its not broken.

Whoa! I missed a dog thread?!!

This is Kai. (AKA, the Trail Queen.) Actually Kairi. Named after a video game character, my kids tell me. 4 year old Golden Retriever. About 60 lbs. She's a rescue. Her mom and litter were confiscated during a drug bust. (What kind of self-respecting drug king pin has Goldens?) Her mom and the pups were malnourished and she was also the runt of the litter. She's a bit nervous. She doesn't really care for camping but is a hiking machine. She used to go backpacking but now mostly sticks to day hikes. I tell people she is a 14er specialist. She seems to be part cat and is extremely nimble on rocks.

Here's the cat part:

Loves hiking:

Camping, not so much:

And this is my backpacking buddy, Buddy. Almost 3 year old Golden. 82 pounds last time I weighed him but needs to slim down a bit, even with all the exercise he gets. Happiest, friendliest dog you'll ever meet. Best backpacking partner you could have if you don't mind shedding and the smell of wet dog. Ready for anything and everything.

"(What kind of self-respecting drug king pin has Goldens?) "

Exactly!

If some rival drug runner tried to invade his place, the Golden would attack and lick him on the face.

This Corky, a Tibetan Terrier. I he is 8. He likes to hike, but his mom (my wife Joyce) won't let him backpack -- he needs to stay home and protect her when I am gone. Not to mention his coat gets too long. Weight is 35 lbs.

Her name is "Shasta" like the mountain not the drink, lol
She's half Border Collie/Mc Nabb weighs about 25 lbs on a good day.
This dog loves to hike, but at home she's a spastic, just does figure 8's in the backyard all day long, my backyard looks like a moto cross track with burms and jumps.

When we're out on the trail she knows all her commands, stop, left, right, up, down sit, lay, heal, stay, and so on, but at home she looks at me like you're kidding right, this is my yard! I do what I want here buddy, but really she's pretty good I tend to exaggerate a bit.

I do need to get her rattle snake trained though and vacinated, she would probably think it's a play toy.

This is the first week when I brought her home, I'm glad she finally grew into those ears.

Shasta

Our first hike to Sespe Creek.

Just chill'n behind the tarp in the shade ready to go hiking.

"What is your dog's gear base weight?"

I don't know, Bob, but I'm considering asking the Zimmerbuilt guy to make her a cuben pack.
