I hike mostly in the desert, and on most trips don't take a shelter at all. When there's weather that warrants taking a shelter, it usually involves lots of wind and sand and a shelter that I can pitch all the way to the ground is usually worth the extra weight over this one. I might make a small flat tarp this winter for some solo trips, but I just haven't found myself using this one much in the past year.
