To the OP, I don't know your budget; but if you want a jacket / coat that will keep you warm for hours / days on end. Look no further then a Canada Goose expedition parka. Expensive and heavy - but warm. In fact, I wouldn't wear mine unless it was 20F or I'd cook in it. “Priority #1 should be to keep that insulation dry!” I agree, and I think that Mark Twight would also agree, at least to some extent. Twight knew the PNW: he worked at the Seattle store of The North Face. But the PNW he wrote about was 19,000 feet up a rocky, icy, snowy cliff-face on Denali, with howling winds and bitter cold. The only possible form of precipitation was dry snow, not rain. His clothing system wouldn’t work at all in the relatively warm woods of Oregon or Washington, as you correctly pointed out.
