Rem,
Yes. "lighten your load" philosophy does cross into other parts of life and career.
Consider reducing stress with finance management. A higher than the average percentage population, BPL people have paid off their mortgage, and bills. That was accomplished by identifying NEED vs WANT.
Do you want a large screen TV and the increased HD cable bills, or is the old TV good enough with basic cable. Can you even get by without a TV?
When stuff around the house is ready to be tossed out, evaluate if you even need it and all the maintenance that it brings?
I'm not endorsing a minimalist lifestyle, rather question and evaluate the money, time, space drainers. All those paper based fashion, health, decor magazines, at $20 per year per magazine, that daily $5 Starbucks drink.
Again, I'm not endorsing hoarding money, rather, the shift is, the less you spend on non-essential things, the less of you time you have to deal with that stack of unread magazines that collect dust, take up space, eat up your quality time, and feel like you behind on your reading and need to catch up.
Aside from time, any money you don't spend, is money you do not need to earn on the job, and it's money you don't have to pay income taxes on by virtue of not earning it, as well as no sales tax by not buying it. Looking at phone and cable bill, there are 9 different mystery tax line item. nickel and diming your wallet, but also more precious is your time.
paying off bills, and not starting frivolous new bills allows you to have more time in the short term by working less over time to pay for junk. As we get older, we have less time. can't make, trade or buy more time. so it's a fixed amount. also, if you are in the money saver category, then you have more free time in your late years to do your hobbies, rather than suffer with late retirement in your 70s at a job that may not treat you well. There is long term dignity benefits in UL philosophy.
I was considering a better paying job, but it was a 2 hr commute each way. In my young 20s, I did the sacrifice in traffic. Now with finances in order, I'm willing to forgo the extra money that will eat up 4 hr/day, 20hr/week traffic. I could have more cash in the bank, but at this stage in life it will burn into my quality of life, stress level, hobby and hiking time. That potential extra cash would have to go into pain killers, massage muscle therapy, and (jokingly) marriage counseling, or not jokingly if I'm always stressed out after work.
In technology, there is an old acronym from the 60s. KISS rule. Keep It Simple, Stupid!
While I am not a tarp tent guy, because of mosquitoes, many here on BPL favor low-tech options, for simplicity and reliability. David's comment about a screwdriver vs an electric cordless powertool is a perfect example.
Then there is the environment stuff, reduce, re-use, recycle. if you care about that.
Travel light, go far, in life, career, finances, with your precious time.
