“Digital Photography and the Real World from National Parks to Antarctica,” a lecture by photographer, teacher and author Stephen Johnson, will be free and open to the public on Sept. 14 at Napa Valley College. Sponsored by Napa Valley College’s Photography Department, the talk will be held at 7 p.m. in the college’s Performing Arts Center, Room 142, 2277 Napa-Vallejo Hwy.

Canon’s Explorer of Light Photographer

In 1999, Folio Magazine declared the publication of Johnson’s digital photographs in Life Magazine to be one of the Top 15 Critical Events in magazine publishing in the 20th century. Johnson was named as a 2003 inductee into the Photoshop Hall of Fame, recognized for his achievements in Art. Canon named him as one of their Explorers of Light in 2006. In 2007 X-Rite named him as a founding member of their exclusive Coloratti group of photographers and educators honored for their skills in color management. Current projects include With a New Eye, an all-digital national parks photographic project, a collection of recent work around the world Exquisite Earth, and huge digital panoramics.

I've done Canon's Explorer's of Light before, or whatever they call them, and it was very so-so. While the speaker was interesting and entertaining, he didn't provide nearly enough technical or creative information but did spend a great bit on promoting his works for sale...

I would be a wealthy man if I had a dime for every so-so photo expert presentation that I have attended over the last ten years.

Prior to that, however, I attended one by the late Galen Rowell. RIP.
