Nothing new here, the original KIMM (now OMM) has been on the go for decades and continue to be popular. I have done the LAMM a few times. It's a different mindset from backpacking/hiking tho': it's a competition. Thus you don't mind doing without 'luxury' items for one night. No tarps allowed: the rules require "a tent with a sewn-in groundsheet" as well as full waterproofs. Navigation is point-to-point, orienteering style - map and compass only (GPS are banned). It was the navigational challenge that I enjoyed most.
