Im taking the Kindle on the Bibbulmun Track next month (unless I buy a house before I leave...I hope I dont...) and Im looking at loading the kindle with some great books for the journey that are cheap :) Free is best, but a few bucks is ok.

Ive downloaded a few classics such as Tolstoy but looking for more great books that people can suggest :)

I just read Cheryl Strayed's WILD:Lost and Found on the PCT. It was a very good read!

I'm finding that the free (or .99) reads on Kindle often are really bad editions of classic works or older, bad translations. For example I downloaded Dostoevsky's The Idiot because it was the only Dost. they had; it's my least favorite novel by him and the translation was terrible. On the other had I downloaded Twain's Roughing It for .99; haven't read it yet but how bad could it be? Also, weirdly, all of the freebies and .99 books that I've downloaded have already established highlighted sections, exactly as if they were a used book that another person had read. Not a big deal but strange. I've come to not like my kindle except for backpacking, where it's great. I read a lot books with notes and annotations and navigating around is a hassle. Just my opinion.

Ive put yours in the cart awaiting Jason...its $12.99...I find it hard to spend that much when its not a physical thing...tis weird...

Jeffrey, Ive found good and bad books, but mostly good. I usually look at the reviews and they will usually say if the translation and/or layout is bad or not...but then for free its not much of a gamble really :)
Regarding the highlighted sections, this is something that you can turn off. Its just areas that people have highlighted and allowed Amazon to use their highlighted areas...people like Quotes outlined for some reason...

How To Turn Off Popular Highlights on the Kindle
1. Press the "Home" button to return to your Home screen.
2. Press the Menu button.
3. Select "Settings" on the menu.
4. Select "off" for the Popular Highlights setting.

Navigatting I find reasonable easy, mainly as I only buy books from my computer and they are downloaded wirelessly to my kindle. Then I have to just scroll through to a book to read and start reading...easy :)

Mostly classics, but all the ones I have downloaded have been great, with no highlights or dodgy formatting. Best of all, if you decide you don't like it then you're not out anything :)

My recent favourites include several works by Dickens, the Bronte sisters, Jane Austen and Victor Hugo. For some late night chills, check out M.R. James' ghost stories.

Emil, I have always thought Amazon Prime was a bit gimmicky, however I looked into what I would have saved just in the last 6 months postage with eligible items from Amazon and I would have been ahead a good $90...will have to purchase soon :)
