Garmin, typically known for their GPS running watches has finally come out with a watch product aimed squarely at outdoor adventurers. The Fenix comes with the standard ABC trio (barometric altimeter, barometer, and compass), a temperature sensor, and a GPS. There are a few additional features however that make this model stand out in particular: an external wireless temperature sensor, and wireless communications with similar models and smartphones. The external temperature sensor finally allows us to measure the ambient temperature away from the body - strap it to your pack or outside your tent. The wireless communications feature allows you to exchange routes, waypoints, or trip logs with other devices (map your trip on your iPhone). If you are into endurance sports, a heart rate monitor strap can be optionally added. Battery life with the GPS off is 6 weeks. When using an external sensor (temperature or heart rate strap), battery life can be expected to be 3 weeks. When using the GPS, battery life can be anywhere between 16 and 50 hours depending on sampling frequency. It is waterproof to a depth of 50m. As with all GPS watches battery life is the big issue here. Since the watch can be charged via USB there is potential to bring along an external battery pack (i.e. Goal Zero) to give it a boost along the way and perhaps still keep the weight below that of a traditional GPS unit.
