Had some info in the pre trip planning forum and thought I should move it here.

We had a great time last year on Morris Meadow.


This year, I have kept the hike in a little shorter. Those of you who drive 4+ hours to get here should not get a nine mile hike in bed the fist night right away as a reward.

I have chosen Bowerman Meadow as our base camp location. 3.5 miles from the trailhead. This will give us a chance for two different hikes from there. The Four Lakes Loop is accessible from Long Canyon Trail.


We are shooting for a large camping area about 3-3.5 miles from the trailhead above the end of the meadow. "The well defined trail leads towards a grove of alders, across a seasonal stream,and over to a large camping area.", says the guidebook. That sounds good for us.

From the meadow there is a challenging cross country route to three remote lakes, Lake Anna, Billy Be Damn Lake, and Echo Lake.

This trip promises lakes, granite, mountains, views, good times.

How to get there...

Find yourself on Hwy 299 in Weaverville, CA. and the junction with Hwy 3. Go north on Hwy 3 for 22.5 miles. You should spot a sign that says Long Canyon Trail 3, Mule Creek 7 turn left here onto County Road 115(signed Long Canyon Drive.). This junction is shortly beyond Guy Covington Drive on the right and immediately after a bridge over the East Fork of the Stuart Fork.

Travel along paved road passing numerous turnoffs to private houses until you reach a right hand turn onto Forest Rd. 35N10 at 2.6 miles, which should be signed for Long Canyon Trail. Follow this gravel road for 0.3 mile to another signed intersection, where you turn left into the ample parking area near the trailhead.

Like last year it is best if each carload gets their own backcountry permit. They are free. You can register in Weaverville at the Forestry office west of your intersection with Hwy 3.

Search for 40.92098, -122.85982 in google earth and that will give you the position of Bowerman Meadows. Billy-Be-Damn Lake and Lake Anna are west and slightly north . Long Canyon is the drainage north of Bowerman Meadows which leads to the four lake loop with Siligo Peak in the middle of the loop. Hope this helps.

I am still interested as well, I haven't met anyone from this forum yet. Would you mind if I brought my main hiking buddy along? (hes not a member on this forum yet)
The cross country routes to those lakes sounds like fun. Is echo lake the famously remote lake that is really hard to get to and involves climbing up waterfalls? The name sounds really familiar.

Do you know if bears are much of an issue?

Bears are around. I have not heard of them being much of a problem, No canisters required if that's any indicator. I will not be testing my food bag as a pillow though.

Anybody camping Thursday night?

I was thinking of crashing at the trailhead on Thurs. Anyone else?

I'm pretty sure I'm in, but not sure if I be in on Thursday or Friday. Ken, can you email me your topo map? Thanks!

Ken, I might be able to make Thurs. Sandra isn't sure if she's going... so if not I might pull a fast one and dodge out a day early... would be late though. What time did you have in mind?

I am considering crashing at the trailhead thurs night as well, I've never been up this trail though is it just a turn out with an info sign or does it have more.

First time for me as well. Could be full of surprises.
