Hammock Gear 50F Burrow quilt. on 07/15/2012 22:59:10 MDT Print View

Just put an order to use it as my summer quilt, planning to use it in the house as my winter warmer. Any thoughts on this product?

good stuff on 07/16/2012 03:32:18 MDT Print View

Stormcrow makes good gear.

I'm just about to order quilt 7 & 8 from him. Haven't owned a HG sewn through 50 but did have a TeWa Tq like it.

Great quilt for the temps the are built for.

Is this one for the hammock or ground too ??

Width on 07/16/2012 04:49:36 MDT Print View

I guess it's not so critical for a 50°F TQ but I like a little more width on the ground over the standard 50" taper design.

I had used my 40°F Burrow (Standard width & Fill) on the ground at 34°F, just baselayers and was still warm under the quilt but struggled a little with gaps around the edges when I'd move, even the smallest amount.
That was on a exped synmat and I'm 78kgs, 40" chest.

If your bigger or wider than me you might wanna ask for a lttle more width.
Again, It might not be so important on a 50°F TQ as your not really pushing things temp wise and I'd imagine it would be primarily a warm/hot weather TQ.

Liner to add some warmth on 07/17/2012 23:34:42 MDT Print View

I'm 5'8" and 65KG's. I think 50" should be fine. Is there any ultralight liner which can add few degrees. I'm thinking with long johns and baselayer+fleece I can probably take it down to 30 degrees. Thoughts?

Not 30 on 07/18/2012 02:50:06 MDT Print View

I think 30°F would be very optimistic.

I did have a sewn through TQ from Tewa that had the same 5oz fill. Unfortunately for me the first night I used it temps dropped to freezing. Even with all my clothes, rain gear etc I was still cold, actually re-write that, I was freezing and shivered until daybreak from about 1pm the night before. Those sewn through quilts are realy only a summer quilt, exactly as they are made for.

I think getting an extra 20°F out of a quilt might be possible but few would get there in comfort.

The amount of extra clothing you'd need and the weight of a liner would be heaps more than a correctly rated quilt would weigh. It's amazing the extra warmth 3-4oz down makes to a TQ, oh and baffles help to.

I have a MYOG bag that's maybe 50 F.

I wear vest that has maybe 4 oz synthetic insulation.

I'm good down below 30 F. At 20 F I'm cold so I substitute down vest.

Long Johns, fleece, and liner don't add very much warmth for the weight. Better to have synthetic or down puffy insulation.

Down vest option... on 07/18/2012 07:51:59 MDT Print View

I was thinking about getting a thermolite reactor liner since they claim it adds 15*F warmth. Think I should spend that money on Down insulation.

I think that down insulation will give more warmth for the same wieght

But I don't really know what material that uses for insulation

It says it weighs 8.7 ounces and gives 15 F more warmth

I think you could get a synthetic or down vest or jacket that weighs about the same that gives more warmth than that.

Eddie Bauer Jacket on 07/18/2012 08:41:30 MDT Print View

Just ordered a Eddie Bauer FA down sweater. It's on sale for $99.

Thermolite reactor bag is $55 ish. I think the down sweater can be a good allround piece and better value for the money.

How about adding warmth to the legs, is my REI midweight long underwear enough to pair with the down sweater.

If you want to go down to 30 F, many people would want more than one leg layer

I just wear nylon pants and insulated booties with 50 F sleeping bag down to 20 F. If you wear a little more around your torso there'll be some extra body warmth to keep legs warm.

If you had a pants base layer, and some other pants, like wind or water resistant pants, that might be better. Don't need insulated pants though.

Each person is different. Each night can be a little different depending what you ate and stuff. You could take a little more than the minimum, and after a few trips leave an item or two behind if not needed.
