Lightweight Daypack Suggestions? on 07/07/2012 11:54:45 MDT Print View

I'm looking to pick up a lightweight small-ish sling bag for hiking away from base camp. I've got my big Osprey 70, but I'm looking for something that I can carry some water and odds and ends when hiking in the afternoons. Hopefully a sling bag that won't add too much weight to my overall gear total. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking about this ripstop Patagonia sling. It only weighs about 5oz and should pack up tight. I'm mostly carrying it for water/pocket items/maybe small tackle case.

Ya Rory that one looks good, same price as the arrowhead one I listed above (twice the weight)but a lot more features.I guess it depends on what is important to you.I think the shoulder strap on the Patagonia looks more comfortable too.The Zimmerbuilt Bandoleer I linked is heavier(more featues) and going to be more expensive(I am guessing).

The Zimmerman looks real sharp. But since I won't be overnighting with it, it may be more volume than I need. This would be more of an 4-5 hour hike bag. Overall, any ripstop solution is going to weigh next to nothing though so that extra space could be useful...hmmm.

I made my own "daypack"

16" x 14" silnylon rectangular bag

zipper opening

1.5" grosgrain "shoulder straps"

1.6 ounces

good enough to carry a pint of water, jacket, a couple misc. things

While not a sling pack, I highly recommend the MLD Newt for a great lightweight, do-it-all daypack. Then you can always say:

"She turned me into a newt!"

I sewed one up out of thin silnylon. It was sized to fit a BearVault 500 into it, although the shoulder straps are so flimsy that I wouldn't want to put a fully loaded one in. It weighs 1.4 oz.
