Wasn't sure if "Chaff" or "On the Web" was the best forum, but I read this interesting article in the CU Alumni magazine on an alumnus who started a non-profit that teams up alpinists/hikers/etc with researchers to collect data and specimens for scientific projects.

I know there are a couple programs that do this for divers, and one that offers trips for general marine research. I think this the first I know of for land-based research.
