I found this Scientific American article kind of strange. Fine that they are intelligence testing bears, but odd that they are starting so low:

We all knew bears could count, right?

So more surface area is better than pure numbers alone. That should make most Americans feel at ease! And that's just black bears--how smart are griz?

Seriously though, this might explain why the incidence of violent bear encounters drops significantly with groups of 4 or more.
