BACKCOUNTRY RESUPPLY? on 06/13/2012 15:14:24 MDT Print View

I've read a lot on what is needed and how much but haven't found any info on what's available in the backcountry. Specifically, do the backcountry stores have bug repellant, toothpaste, sunscreen, etc? I read in one post where they purchased gaitors at a backcountry store so that leads me to believe that there's more than root beer or candy. Any info is appreciated! T-72 hours to departure...

Depending on the size of the staff camp that has the store, you should be able to find what you need but don't expect REI. Ute Gulch has a nice supply of items where as Baldy Town, Ponil, Abreu, etc. have a more limited supply. Enjoy.

Tooth of Time Traders supplies/runs the backcountry stores. I called Philmont about sunscreen in the backcountry and they transfered me to Tooth of Time Traders who verified that sunscreen is available in the backcountry. See for brands you can expect to find.

BACKCOUNTRY RESUPPLY... on 06/14/2012 11:42:58 MDT Print View

Thanks for the feedback. The crew was wondering if we could take smaller, sample size items and then plan to resupply as needed. Sounds like we should be able to for the basics. We pass through Ute Gulch on Day 4 and then Miranda towards the end so will see how our planning plays out. Thanks again...

Looking for places to buy canister gas in back country. Only place to buy it in south is Phillps Junction. I am on trek 1. Where is Phillps Junction. Will I go through it to buy gas.

No, you're not going to PJ on Trek 1. It's rather out of your way. It's also fairly early on your trek. The only place listed on ToTT that has gas canisters on your trek is Ute Gulch. And that's late in your trek. Best to work out what you need and have it with you - buy it at base camp. We tend to over-estimate and have always had extra canisters.
