Solo 11oz quilt (MYOG) on 06/04/2012 13:54:00 MDT Print View

Finished my quilt.

78" long, 50" wide at the top, and 40" wide at the bottom.
10.25oz.
I think it'll be perfect for the AT thru hike I start on the 19th.

Made with 8D from Titaniumgoat.com, and the Climashield XP 2.5oz from Thru-hiker.com. Basically took me an afternoon to cut it out and pin it together. Had I chosen to exile my two very curious dogs, I could likely have finished the cutting and pinning even faster. As it was, it took a few tries, a few beers, and much cursing.

I sewed it up yesterday in a couple of hours, and then spent another hour to hand stitch the snaps at the footbox while I watched some of the last TV I'll get for a while.

Here's me beneath it with the footbox snapped up.

#1

#2

I was going to use a drawcord on the footbox, but felt the snaps were simpler and less obtrusive. Here's the footbox closed.

#3

And open.

#4

And the quilt draped over my thermarest. From this perspective you can't really see the taper, but the foot end is, in fact, 10" narrower than the head end.

#5

Really happy with this, but I think my second one will be much better. The sewing ain't the greatest, but then, the 8D is pretty slippery; especially with the insulation between layers. I ended up having to pin it every 6 inches or so, just to keep it from sliding around.

Anyhoo, I highly recommend the Climashield for being super easy to work with, and Tim is right, the 8D feels great against the skin. I will likely make a double quilt out of the same stuff upon my return.

That looks really nice!

I agree, 8D is very nice material, feels good against the skin, why is it so inexpensive?

I too have noticed it takes longer and more cursing while drinking beer : )

Nice example of perspective - looks like a rectangle but the deck boards give it away

Wow Dion!

That weight is fantastic. Does it have a drawcord at the top?

Lol... No sir, there wasn't. That's why I purchased the material free of it.

Is there a drawcord at the top? on 06/04/2012 19:20:04 MDT Print View

No there is not. I like tucking it in around me, and wondered at how obtrusive a cord-lock would be, so I decided against it. one of the reasons I went with snaps on the footbox instead of the drawcord, so the cord-lock wouldn't be a nuisance.

Very nice dude! Looks great and the weight is sweet too! Congrats.

I didn't fare to well with mine...I ended up sending the stuff to Tim and after some talking, he is doing me one up, but I also ordered another one from him too! I can't wait to get it...

And yea, I agree, the 8D feels great against the skin.

Good luck on your hike man!

Thanks for the well-wishes, Chad.

And BTW... I've been calling it Climashield XP... I meant Apex, not XP... d'oh!
