They all sound like the same person in different stages...

1)the fourth guy cannot go because his wife delivered the baby prematurely, and he jokes that she did it on purpose to cancel his trip.

2)the third guy cannot go because he just returned from his son's boyscout camping trip and is required to log some hours with his wife at home

3)One buddy bailed on this weekend's adventure because his wife has him castrated,

4)the second guy cannot go because he needs to prep documents for the divorce lawyer

Should be free for hiking once the divorce is final.

So, they can't go because of wife, wife, wife, and wife, in one form or another. It's a lifestyle they chose.

Sound like one guy is giving it up. He might have time in the future.

One key to a good marriage is the understanding that, "If it is truly good for her/him, it's good for me."

If you or your spouse doesn't truly understand that, your relationship is doomed. If you and your spouse do understand that, you're on a good and getting better path.

It doesn't sound like the guys above have wives that understand that simple reality.

And my wife is my backpacking partner.

Can't beat that.

Not only is my wife my backpacking partner, she will use any excuse to go! We are already overbooked this summer with 2 trips to Yosemite and a loop through some slot canyons as well as to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon down to Bright angel. BTW, my three college aged daughters are trying to crash in on over half of our trips.

Jealous.


My wife is amenable to hiking and I can usually get her to do a 4-5 mile dayhike, but only if I carry the kid, the food and the water.

Her idea of camping is with an AC'd 5th wheel, a hot shower, and a gas grille.

On the bright side, the vast majority of my hikes are with the aforementioned 30+# load, so when I get out for a real trip with an 18-20# pack, I practically run down the trail.

I would have thought reason #1 would be pretty convincing.

Who would not want to stay at home with their new born child?

One of my favorite (non-X-rated) things to come out of her mouth is "when do we get to go backpacking again?"

No kidding.

I don't WHAT the situation is but if your child is born you had better be there. Did you expect him to leave and not be there? When she was due? It doesn't matter what the back story is: it was HIS KID. It doesn't matter who feels trapped, etc. It is an innocent child who needs love FROM BOTH PARENTS. A real man stands up and takes care of what he got himself into and is there, taking care of teh baby - taking on 3 am diaper changes and rocking teh baby to sleep.

Sorry, but get over yourself.

I have to agree with both Miguel and Sarah!

I don't call it "flaking" for a man to be living up to his responsibilities!
