There are many peaks that are hyped and over played like a Nirvana song in the 90s.
These days looking at a map of the pop So Cal peaks, I often aim for nearby peaks that are 100 feet shorter in elevation than the rock star peaks, but no one wants to bag those.
good for me, less crowds, but I wonder about the personality of the do-or-die types. Its not about the effort, or the summit views or the experience, it's largely about the ego and the bragging.
Everest, Kilimanjaro, etc are brand names. People brag about a Rolex. Locally here, Mt San Antonio (Baldy), San Gorgonio, San Jacinto are the bad boy peaks. very close to each summit is a perfectly good cousin summit. I never heard anyone brag about or mention Jean Peak, it's always Jacinto Jacinto Jacinto.
Reminds me of a funny quote from the Starsky & Hutch movie: "It's not a boat, It's a YACHT"
