After reading Mike McClellands book, I'm sold on the idea of using swim trunks as opposed to underwear.

Any recommendations? Which ones are the lightest, breathable, etc.

SPEEDOS... if ya got the body to go with them.

Used as your hiking underwear to combat chaffing and as a swim suit as well. They just look like bike shorts so would be just fine.

I'm hoping for something somewhat modest. I don't want to scare other hikers with speedos or anything else form fitting.

I've been looking at the mountain hardwear Refueler shorts: http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Men%27s-Refueler%E2%84%A2-Short/OM4623,default,pd.html

They are antimicrobial, 3.5oz and have a liner. They have a dwr finish on them, which is nice for drying quick, but I'm wondering if that will make me sweaty when worn under my pants?

It's very simple, actually. The higher you cut, the lighter they get. You're welcome!

Seriously, any running shorts (Saucony, Brooks, Pearl Izumi, etc) like the MH Refueler should be fine. Nice too that you can often find running shorts on sale at specialty running stores or places like REI or roadrunnnersports.com. Target has Champion brand ones. Just make sure the waistband and liner are comfortable for you.
