Weekend trip suggestions out of Los Angeles? on 05/01/2012 15:53:17 MDT Print View

I was hoping to get some weekend trip suggestions for a trip my buddies and I are planning this summer. I am still fairly new to backpacking in the Sierra's so I usually just go along with them, but would like to contribute to the trip planning.

Any suggestions are welcome, but I will mention the two trips we have done to show you what the other guys like (me? I'm just happy to be in nature). Both trips were near Bishop, CA, hiked up to some higher elevation lakes, and spent the weekend day-hiking around and fishing:

1) Hiked up to Hilton Lakes from the Rock Creek Lake Parking lot (take 395, exit Tom's Place and take Rock Creek Rd to the end)

2) Hiked up to Treasure lakes from the South Lake parking lot (from Bishop, take 168 to south lake road)

Lone Pine is closer than either of your previous trips and there is a trail there that will take you 6 miles to Cottonwood Lakes. Primo high-alpine meadows, lakes, trout, soaring granite. also connecting trails for climbing higher if wanted and to make 3-4 day loops.

Yeah, I was looking at Cottonwood lakes. It sounds like a popular fishing destination and they allow quite a few people at the trail head. How crowded does it get at the lakes. Lake 5 is the only one you can keep what you catch so that is where we would probably go.

Depends on when you go, I was there in October and saw only a few people beyond the first 3 miles. We fished Muir, Cottonwood 3,4 and 5, had them all to ourselves for two days.
