Clothing System for a 4-5 day South San Juan summer trip. on 04/28/2012 14:18:05 MDT Print View

Hey guys, I'm new here and new to backpacking in general. My dad and I are planning a 4-5 day trip in Late July or August in the South San Juans. I've just about got all my gear but haven't really started looking at clothing yet. I've got a nice pair or Patagonia Cap 2's for a base but I'm really unsure of what to use outer pants. I know I will need an insulating top like a down jacket, and I've already got a Golite Pancho for rain protection. Can you help fill in the gaps here?

Assuming you're talking warm arid conditions... Anything non-cotton that you might wear to the gym will be good for hiking, no need to buy anything. If you must, Ross or Marshall's have tons of athletic clothing, as do Walmart and Target. You should find plenty of breathable, comfortable options, t-shirts, running pants, running shorts, etc. anything thin, breathable, fast drying, synthetic.

Edit: oh, and welcome!!!

Southern San Juan's at that time of year shouldn't see lows below 45 to 50 at night assuming you are below tree level. So a down vest or long sleeve fleece should be all the insulation you need. Bear in mind that July/August is prime thunderstorm season so I might opt for fleece instead of down if you expect significant rain (likely).

Thanks for the responses guys. I've got plenty of light athletic clothes already. The folks have a cabin up there at 9k and it regularly drops into the low 40's and occasionally below 40 in the river valley that time of year, so that's the temps I'm planning for. We will be mostly in the trees but may spend a night above the treeline. So I'm thinking a base layer, a athletic tee shirt, some zip off nylon pants, a puffy jacket and some socks are about all I'll need. Please add if needed. I'm trying to get my base weight sub 13lbs, so obviously looking to pack as little as possible.

Welcome to BPL. Sounds good so far. If you're in the sun you might be suprised how warm it can be at times. I remember one day it was probably in the mid 80s at about 10,000 so definately make sure a T-shirt is on that list.

Edit - You may already know this but be ready for the altitude. Everyone reacts differently but if I go above 10,000 to fast I tend to suffer a bit. If I'm only up for a short time (like going over a pass) its okay but if I go high and stay there I feel it more.

Thanks for the response. I may be new to backpacking but I've spent my share of time at altitude. I have always had a tough time acclimating since I dwell at about 400ft here in Texas. I'm hoping this year will be a little different. I started running in November and now run 6 miles regularly. I'm hoping that my new found lungs will help me out. Regardless, we will be spending a few days at 9k before heading out.
