David,
You may want to try (209) 962-7825 (instead of ---7925) for the Groveland Ranger District Office. That's the number I have on several brochures.

David,
We had some mosquitoes but not too bad. I got the most bites and didn't re-apply DEET often enough probably. I think there will be more bugs out by now.

No, we didn't fish. However, we saw a bald eagle each day and it was definitely "fishing" in Kibbie Lake.

Kibbe Lake and Many Island Lake on 06/05/2012 23:27:25 MDT Print View

No fires allowed at Kibbe Lake - no camping within 1/4 mile of lake last time I was there (2007). Good fishing in early season on standard attractor dry flies although the fish always seemed just out of my flycasting range. Didn't try spinners.

Non free standing tents are fine at Many Island Lake. There's a lot of granite, but a lot of duff campsites as well. No fish rising and no luck fly fishing in June of 2007.

NOAA Weather forecast..... on 06/11/2012 23:13:39 MDT Print View

Here's what the NOAA says for the Many Island Lake area (+/- 7400'):

Friday: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 72.

Friday Night: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 48.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 76.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 49.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 77.

Around 800 feet lower at Kibbie Lake daytime temps touch on 90 degrees. Yikes! Looks like a nice hike in on Friday and an early exit on Sunday.

My son Kevin and I will be there. My work situation for an early Friday start has deteriorated. We may end up car camping at the trailhead Friday night if we get too late of a start. Or we may hike in as far as we can if we still have daylight when we get there. Is many islands lake the meet up place? Looking forward to meeting up.
Mike

6/14 - My work situation was resolved so we will be leaving the bay area on Friday morning as well.

Re: NOAA Weather forecast..... on 06/12/2012 22:39:47 MDT Print View

I planned this a month ago and I took a bit of a risk with the potential for hot weather. Now that we have an decent 5 day forecast it looks like its going to be a hot weekend as Dave noted in his post above. The first part of this hike is exposed and at a low elevation (5k).

I am sensitive to making changes because people make plans. I am throwing a suggestion out for discussion and if people prefer to maintain the previously planned Many Island Lake hike that is great with me. I am suggesting that we keep the hike in Emigrant but move to a trailhead and destination at a higher elevation. I am thinking about Kennedy Meadows to Emigrant Lake which is about the same distance as the original hike (13 miles) The first part of this trail can get hot too but it should be better than Cherry Lake. Emigrant Lake is at about 9k feet and should be significantly cooler. The fishing there is excellent from my past experience and reading reports from others. Permits are no problem and can be picked up at the Pinecrest Ranger Station. No bear can required. The distance driving to the trailhead should be comparable. For Mike, there are lots of forest service campsites in the area and camping at the trailhead. I spoke to Jack and he liked the proposed change. Sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment. Thoughts? Suggestions?

jack just left my house a bit ago and informed me of the proposed plan change

im good with any change in plans either way it will be a great trip and if the fishing is good it will be even better

hope everyone else is on board with it but if not we can stick to the original plan

I hit you over the head until you pass out, then I can catch all the fish I want!
