Working on a microtarp, and I'm wondering whether there's any reason I couldn't use a small split ring (~ 1 g) instead of a grommet (or tying to loop). Anyone have either practical or theoretical arguments pro or con?

The only con I can think of immediately is that the edges of the split ring may tear a hole in the tarp when packed. Should be easy to deal with though - file down?
