Do you use a ground sheet with your SMD Serenity? on 04/18/2012 13:04:36 MDT Print View

I have always carried a Tyvek sheet and put it under the Serenity. I have never even questioned why I do it - I just always have. I was just looking over my gear list and saw the weight I carry for it and decided to pose the question to y'all.

Do you do the same? Is it worth the 4.6 ounces? Is the serenity bottom waterproof on its own? If you think a ground sheet is indeed a good idea, do you know a lighter and just as durable option?

Polycryo sheets are going to be tough enough and much lighter, probably around 1 oz for the Serenity footprint. You can get them at Gossamer Gear: http://gossamergear.com/shelters/shelter-accessories.html

GG's price isn't bad, but I avoided that order because as I recall they had minimum shipping charge of around $12. Just checked and it looked like there's a $2.99 ground shipping option for that small order now.

You can also just get one of the kits at Home Depot or Lowe's for insulating windows. I believe it's the same material, you may just need to cut it to size:
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=202262330&storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&MERCH=REC-_-product-1-_-frost%3bking%3bwindow%3b202262335-_-202262330-_-N

You can do search on 'polycryo groundsheet' and probably get more info.

Thanks, I have been thinking about ordering one of those.
