Tarp Recommendation - GG Spinn Shelter or ZPacks Hexamid Solo on 04/13/2012 17:49:01 MDT Print View

I would like to get a versatile tarp that is great by itself for warm weather, but could be used as a system in cold, rainy, snowy, etc weather.

I have been looking at the GG Spinn Shelter made out of Spinnaker (~9 oz) and the Z Packs cuben fiber Hexamind solo tarp (without bottom mesh) with the extended beak (5.6 oz). Does anybody have any experience with these that can tell me some of the pros and cons, etc?

I have the GG The One tent (17 oz) and will keep that, but I want a lighter option for fair weather trips.

thanks!

For fair weather trips or even worse, both are great shelters. The Hexamid is easy to set-up and weighs almost 1/3. Tarps take a little more skill to set up, and do offer flexibility of more pitches. For bad weather I would prefer the Spinn Twinn, which is what I have... but you have the one for those trips. On most trips these days I take the Hexamid -- no beak and no inner.

Susan, take a look at the Patrol Shelter...but either of the above will serve you well. The Spinn provides more room and the Hexamid gives a little more protection. The PS a mix of both.

The SpinnShelter provides more protection than the Patrol Shelter. It is bigger and can be pitched directly to the ground, even the vestibule, unlike the Patrol Shelter. The Heximid with beak probably offers decent protection too, but the SpinnShelter is about as good as it gets for a lightweight full protection shelter.
