Newbie here.

Looking for a deal on a hammock...Clark, Hennessy, or similar. I need to see if it's "for me" as they say, this gettin up off the ground thang.

Anyone have one gathering dust? Thanx.

You could start with a Grand Trunk Ultralight for $20 (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___40675) and add whoopie slings, tree straps and a couple carabiners (see http://www.whoopieslings.com) Those suspension items can be used on other hammocks if you decide to upgrade.

Regardless of the hammock you buy, you will need bottom insulation of some sort and 20" wide pads don't cut it. You can pull it off with a wider CCF pad (see Gossamer Gear, etc), but the real comfort of a hammock is best with an underquilt, which will add a lot to the cost. Tarps are typically larger than ground tarps and made of the same gamut of materials. Your hiking sleeping bag or quilt will do.

Listen you'll hear alot about hammocks from alot of people. I have always thought if you go cheap it ends up costing you more. I have an eno with woopie slings, hammock gear top and bottom insulation, and oes tarp. I recently saw the Warbonnet Blackbird with my own eyes and came to the conclusion that the extra weight was worth the serious upgrade in features. I will be purchasing a new hammock soon. My advice to you is watch the you tube reveiws of the above mention hammock and realize it is totally accurate. Hope to see you hanging out sometime

I have a Grand Trunk Nano...lightest tarp on the market. Brand new without tags. It has no whoopie slings, etc... just the hammock. Throw me an offer... this hammock is just sitting around as I am a ground sleeper. email is garrett dot reggie at gmail dot com.

You can ususlly pick up a Grand Trunk Ultralight from Amazon for about $15-$20. Swap out the S hooks with something lighter and you are in the 10 oz range for cheap.

This is another vote for risking $15-$20 at Amazon on a Grand Trunk Ultralight. You can sell it for half price if you don't like to hang. Substitute carabiners for the steel S hooks that come with it, if you already own carabiners. Use unmodified tie down straps to suspend it.

If you spend $100-$300 dollars on your first hammock setup, you can sell that for over half price too, if hanging is not for you.

Last year, I used a GT UL for a thousand miles of BPing.

If you decide to continue hanging, look into DIY/MYOG for your second hammock and your lightweight second suspension.

It is a noble quest, but just stringing up a hammock and diving in without the other pieces is probably going to make you hate hammocks. You need bottom insulation, a tarp on the topside and I would add some bug protection too. If there are no bugs or rain, you might pull it off with a wide CCF pad and a basic hammock, but it won't give you the "real" hammock camping experience.

My point is that you are buying into a system and the hammock is the core, but won't work well without the rest. I would wait until you have the time and budget to pull it off well. Best of luck!

Ive been hammocking for a while, You can go two ways go cheap at first to see if you like it, or jump in all the way, hammocks tend to hold there value very well, so do the underquilts and tarps. dont forget to take a look at dream hammocks, and warbonnet hammocks.
