Best guyline for use in a linelock? on 04/02/2012 13:00:13 MDT Print View

Simple enough- what is the best guyline for use with Linelocks? Right now all I have that works is paracord- but it's no shocker- paracord makes for a pretty poor guyline and it's a bit on the thick side for use with the linelocks. All the rest of the guylines I have are too thin.
Thanks

some borderline diameter cord will work with a double pass around the lineloc.

2mm to 3mm size reportedly works best (per Joe @ Z-Packs) on 04/02/2012 20:47:13 MDT Print View

I have been using Lawson's Glowire with mine, and if it weren't for the reflective threads, which tends to cause the cord to not bend uniformly and slide as smoothly, it would be ideal. I recently ordered some 2.5mm cord to try with the line locs, hoping it will be an improvement for times when the reflective nature of the cord isn't as important. But for guy lines, I am a big fan of the Glowire, and it does work with the line locs.

Is Lawson's Glowire the same stuff as his IronWire?

The Ironwire and the Glowire are different... Haven't tried the line locs with Ironwire...

"The yellow cord that MLD sends ya. Done."

But it doesn't look like mld sells it seperately. The only guylines they list on their shelter accessories page is 1.5mm stuff for use with the micro line locks.

I've been eyeing the lawson equipment glo-wire and iron-wire. I may just have to get some of that...

Glow wire on 04/03/2012 18:20:52 MDT Print View

I use the Lawson Glow Wire on all of our Scout Tents with the Microloks and love it. Now the Scouts don't trip and tear my tents during the day or night any longer.

If you want a lighter line lock for your guylines, tie a tautline hitch and call it a day. No need for a line lock.

I'm just lazy. :)

Not sure the weight, but light, 1.5mm. Google it. Good stuff.

"If you want a lighter line lock for your guylines, tie a tautline hitch and call it a day. No need for a line lock. "

I did that on my tarp- but on the 'mid it pitches pretty close to the ground so the guylines are really short and it's very hard ot tension a taught line hitch on a short section of line. Plus, you get the cool pulley effect with a linelock- but the real reason I tried them out this time was for the cool professional look to my project :). I used linelocks on the six major tie out locations, and D rings on the rest. Makes it look more sano...

Micro Line Locks on 04/04/2012 15:20:02 MDT Print View

Another option is the micro line locks that Z-Packs sells. Joe says they work with small diameter cords, i.e. 1mm +/-

I use the 1/16 in 300' rolls shown here. I can't say that it is the best but it is cheap, light and knots well.
