GG Blaze vs GG Crown ? on 04/02/2012 07:11:15 MDT Print View

I'm looking to purchase my first lighter weight backpack, but not ready to go with a completely frameless, UL pack.

Two on my list are the GG Blaze and the GG Crown

What are the major differences, and why would one choose one versus the other?

The Crown is obviously lighter, and has a removable frame sheet. Otherwise, they seem to have similar features.

See which one if either fit you first. Some have been caught between sizes.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I live in SouthEast Michigan, and the REI stores here do not stock them locally.

I'll have to order both on my CC, try them in-store, then return one, the other, or both, depending on how they feel.

Not an insurmountable problem, but less than optimal.

The Blaze is slightly bigger, despite what the specs say, and has slightly more robust trimming (i.e. buckles). The framesheet is also stiffer and intended for heavier loads. The Crown is the replacement for the Vapor Trail and the Blaze is the replacement for the Ozone.

I know the Blaze has an adjustable framesheet, so it is easier to get the fit dialed in than on the Crown. The Crown either fits you or it doesn't, which has been a problem for some people around here (although mine fits and I love it).

The Crown sports a roll top closure where the Blaze has a drawstring closure with criss-crossing buckles, so this is probably personal preference.

I really like the modularity of the Crown (removing the framesheet for lighter loads). The GG website states that both packs are good up to 35 lbs, but I'm assuming the Blaze would perform better at that weight due to the stiffer framesheet.

I'd say if you see yourself carrying 30+ lbs often and need the adjustable torso sizing, the Blaze would be a better choice. If you're below the 30ish lb mark and can fit one of the fixed torso sizes, go with the Crown. Both are fantastic packs. Good luck!
