Hello All.

I am selling off all of my hiking gear and if anybody out there is looking to make a one-time purchase for 99% of what gear you would need for a sub 10 pound setup for the PCT or CDT or AT or just about any other long distance trail in the world (plus a bunch of other gear), or one hell of a comfortable sub 20 pound setup, or even a killer awesome sub 5 pound setup, I have combined together the finest gear out there, as I have gone from being a 28 lb BPW hiker down to the sub 2 pound BPW hiker.

Or somebody who is just looking for a UL/SUL/XUL setup and does not feel like doing all the research on it. You can see how I have used most of this gear in my gear lists from the last three years.

This could also be a very sweet way to outfit a family member with a killer setup! (or, buy this for yourself and give them yours ;)

The time has come for me to move onto another adventure! No sad story here — not a matter of anything other than I have another adventure in life I want to pursue!

See everything I have for sale at -- GEAR HAS BEEN SOLD

I have received at least 8 offers on this gear. I have put the offers in order of first contact and will go down the list until one of them sends me a money order.

This is an "all or nothing sale". To be honest, I have no desire to box up dozens of different boxes and ship them to dozens of different addresses.

Thank you to all of my readers at both HikeLighter.Com and RedwoodOutdoors.Com and my hundreds of youtube viewers!! A huge thank you to everybody!

John,

I can't claim to know you well, after only talking with you at last fall's Trinity Alps BPL trip, but I have to say, I'm curious about the next adventure, especially after you've put in such thought to your gear.

Of course, no response or reason needed if you don't wish to share.

Best of luck!

Sizes? on 03/26/2012 16:34:11 MDT Print View

Sizes of clothing and sleeping bag, etc?

Are you expecting bids or what? Edit: Ah, I see you're asking $3600, mentioned in the top part of the list.

Clothing is all large and bag is long.

Thanks.

John,
I realized that it's an all or nothing sale, however...

I'm interested in the Black Rock mittens & Suluk46 windscreen. What shape are they in and the cost if you change your mind?

It would be nice to everyone if you sold everything individually.

I agree with Frank above.
You have a lot of item I'd consider redundant within your set. You'd have a better time selling things off individually.

I agree, who really needs 5 different sleeping pads?

However, if someone were trying to make a few bucks, they can buy the whole lot and go through the trouble of selling each item.

I can obviously see why you want to sell this as one lot as it could take a lot of time to sell all of it individually. If I had the time and energy I could see buying the whole lot and reselling... but I don't have the time. There is profit to be made for someone on this forum.

John, I have already responded to you on your website, but wanted to also post here in case you change your mind about selling it all?? I would like to purchase the Zpacks blast pack with the cuben stuff sacks, the zpacks rain jacket also plz. I'm not able to purchase ALL your gear at this time but I can see why you want to do this.. it would be no headaches involved!
Good luck to you in your new adventures.

Scott

I could use(and really need)everything under the clothing section and would buy the lot. I can understand you not wanting to separate the gear and ship individual items, perhaps this would be an agreeable compromise?

Sad to see that you're moving out of the backcountry, I have recently been comparing my gear with yours to make small improvements.
Cheers!

Split on 03/27/2012 10:34:22 MDT Print View

I tried to sell all my gear in a bundle before, too. I waited at least a month and couldn't find a buyer. I eventually decided to split it up because people had expressed interest in almost everything I had by then, so I actually ended up selling everything within 2-3 days.
If by chance you decide to split it up, I'm interested in:
LevaGaiters, Photon Microlight, Steripen Adventurer, BPL headnet, SeaToSummit Spoon, Blackrock Down Hat, Zpacks Stake Sack, Vargo stakes, Groundhog stakes, Minidroppers, GoLite ChromeDome, MSR Titan Kettle

Hello All,

I have added nearly $800 worth of gear since I posted this yesterday. Asking price is still the same.

Most of the new gear I have added is littly piddly stuff, but two items of note:

Backcountry Boiler (Signature) and the ZPacks Solo-Plus Cuben Fiber Groundsheet Lite.

I ordered the Signature version of the BB without any engraved signature, so it is not going to have my name or anything like that on it. I do not actually have this product yet. It seems that even after 9 months since I paid for it the powers-that-be have decided it is not time for me to receive it yet. I should charge interest on this thing lol. I will ship it out whenever it arrives. I bought it to support the guy and felt it would be cool to play around with... but now its just been 130 bucks lost for 9+ months.

The ZPacks Solo-Plus Cuben Fiber Groundsheet Lite I actually bought to put underneath the ZPacks 6x9 tarp made of 0.34 cuben fiber. It fits under it perfectly and has attachment points to turn it into a sweet bathtub. photo

To address those who are saying there is a lot of redundant gear: Yes, there is. I do not hike with one backpack setup for every hike. I typically have three different backpack setups that I use throughout the year. A 1.7 pound summer time setup, a sub 5 pound shoulder season setup, and a sub 6 pound winter time setup. So yes, there is redundant gear if you are somebody who uses a single backpack setup for every hike all year long. I understand why you might not understand the 'why' and I hope this explains this issue.

To address the issue of breaking it into three or four smaller chunks. That is actually a good idea. However in the end I would want to make sure that everything goes. How would I fairly divide the gear? If three or four of you guys want to work out those details, I will do the work on my end.

To address the issue of selling everything off item by item. Honestly, I have zero desire in my life to write out 120+ different shipping labels - I hope you can respect that. I just do not want to think of the logistics involved in making sure 100+ guys get their right gear in the right box shipped to the right address. Just more effort than I want to put out - and I am sure most of you would agree. But, if somebody out there is detailed oriented in such a manner, who has the time and love for boxing gear, printing labels, going to the post office a lot (I only go to the post office once every two weeks) well, contact me and lets work out a deal of some sort. I am not going to accept low-ball offers but I am more than willing to work with somebody who wants to help spread this gear around.

I would agree with others about breaking the list up. One person mentioned a $300 minimum order, I would suggest a minimum order of 5 items or some other combination. You could also put together one kit of your best UL gear and try to sell that separately as well.

The problem is there is just way too much gear. It's not like its one to two kits. What I am going to do with 8+ stoves when I already own 5. I'm also a size M which means most of the clothing has no value to me.

In reviewing my own gear list, if I replaced everything, it would cost me somewhere between $2,000 to $2,500 and it would be brand new! Why would I pay $3,600 for used gear and bunch of stuff I don't need.

If I came at it as money making perspective the price is too still too high. Why? because probably 20% of the gear won't sell or won't be worth selling. Add a 30% discount because it's primarily used gear and I come up with a value of around $3,200. That doesn't not take into consideration the 30 to 40 hours it would take responding to emails, posting pictures, boxing, and shipping.

I have no doubt that the gear has significant value to you and that you've put in a significant amount of time researching. But the method of selling is more like a gear dump rather than a gear sale. It should be broken up or priced accordingly.
