my fiberglass jeraco truck cap of 10 years STILL hasn't sold.
it exclusively fits an old nissan
(it unfortunately doesn't fit newer models).
the cap itself is quickly aging (spider-like cracks on top now), the sun is feverishly fading it, and depsite the cap being propped, it's weathered and naturally has lost significant value.
the selling point is the yakima roof rack-- which comfortably accomodates 2 full-sized carfts.
my paddling days are over. i've tried selling it through multiple avenues (newspaper, internet, postings 'round town, local outdoor shops), multiple times, for multiple prices ($100 is the newly lowered price)
while i truly don't wish to give it away, i recognize at this point, i'l likely make
little-to-no profit, which -- it is what it is.
still, i'd rather NOT eat it.
what else to do?
should i try selling the parts (t-handle, pistons) individually?
how to recycle fiberglass?
and the roof rack...
hits me like a kick drum.
ideas?

I install camper shells. The old ones are always a problem at the end of their lives. The people who are able to find a buyer for their old cap are the lucky ones. The parts on it are not worth anything. Cut it up and put it in the dumpster. Sorry that has been my experience. You might recoup a little for the Yakima, since they are not vehicle specific.

I have 3 to cut up at the shop right now.

It'll work for a goat or other small livestock shed. List it on craigslist in the farm and garden section.

The most/only useful thing I've ever seen done with an old topper is as a hog house.

Apparently it's just the right size for a couple pigs. I'm not sure you'll get much on craigslist, maybe you should just start keeping some hogs.

give it away and sleep (rather) soundly.

Put four wheels on it and use it as a chicken coop. By rolling it around, the chickens get to nibble grass and scratch for bugs in new areas each day and the fertilizer (so to speak), gets spread throughout the yard.

The main lesson to learned here is never get rid of a truck without the shell. Always make the buyer take it.

Yes Leslie, but you want the sale to be optimal to you. And the gist of your fist post was that you were looking to minimize your financial loss. So try giving it away so someone can use it for one of the suggested uses. I just doubt that the type of person using a shell for a coup will be looking to spend money on one. Stick a please take sign on that thing and hope it disappears while you are gone. Just passing on a lesson for the others who will follow. Best of luck, Leslie.

agreed, yup. optimal.
though i could've waited years more for optimal to be optimal-- if it ever came.
i sold the truck 6 years ago. riddened w/rust that it was lawfully
removed from being driven. the buyer purchased it as a parts truck.
hence, being stuck with the cap.
owning a nissan truck wasn't optimal.
i'll start and end there.
