my feet itch more and more everyday.
provided stars align, i'd like to drive west by fall.
coming from small town new-england, i'm sure to feel displaced.
where to go?
where are the quaint mountain hamlets?
the crested butte's (before their discovery)?
no city livin' for this country bumpkin.
i'll cycle, walk or thumb to ammenities.
less=more.
demographically, a healthy balance of young and old will do me just fine.
an area that teems with "do-it-yerself" ers, in all capacities imaginable.
still, the primary (though not exclusive) reason for my move: jobs.
where are there teaching and/or outdoor-based jobs that pay a liveable wage!
withnin a 30-45 min. drive (or less)?
affordable rent a must! in a cabin or yurt. :)
all 4 seasons are cool, as are rainy days (when else do you balance your checkbook, correct papers, do laundry and catch up on sleep)?
where are all the trees?! the more woods, the better.
where i live now, i step outside and within minutes, i'm lost.
it's not! the western big country, but it's got it's gems, and i can find my solitude within minutes of mashing gears or foot travel.
it's a lifestyle i'd prefer to not compromise.
this is alot, i know.

Sounds like western Sonoma County in California might appeal to you. Redwoods, wine country, coastal beauty, all 4 seasons, close to great destinations...

yeah sonoma county is the place to be my friend... little judgement lots of friendly people. lots of hiking and backpacking within short distance. lots of good organic food... I suggest taking a vacation here its very nice to live here 24/7, sort of spoiled

I grew up in Guerneville, I am biased towards Sonoma County as well.

CA is liberal with acceptance of out-of-state teaching licenses
(hard to find states with unrivaled optimism).
though admittedly i'm apprehensive--
won't wine country make me soft?
(seriously, but not so)
on second thought, can anyone suggest some hamlets in oregon and washington?
(although i'm inclined to think the proximity of jobs aren't where i long to be).

Not in this state. California has become a bad a joke, and I can't wait to finish grad school and get out of this crumbling state. 11,000 teachers pink-slipped the other day, CSU system no longer accepting students for spring 2013. Utterly unaffordable housing. I don't know a single young person here amongst my peer group who has any intention of staying here.

the economy is crumbling and the education system is a joke... but the people are nice and its beautiful...

check out Eugene Oregon. i know some people up there and they love it. no sales tax too

Plus in Oregon you don't have to / can't pump your own gas, its a law!

So every gas station has a guy/gal there to pump for you. Pretty cool.

I agree - have to pump own gas - you don't want to come here : )
