I think the huge question here is whether the canister worked when you got home?
After all, it's not like the canister worked fine for every use and then one time it was screwed on and nothing came out. It stayed connected (i.e. valve in the open position) and sealed, and yet the fuel supply just "petered out." That doesn't sound like a materials or blockage problem. That sounds like a problem with the performance of the fuel itself.
