If I were to use a poncho tarp that is exactly how I would want it. I would find a regular sized poncho tarp (5x8) to be too confined for the PNW conditions I encounter.

Question: how is it to wear? Is the extra material totally in your way? Do you just tie it close to your body or do you have a system to keep it from going everywhere?

Not at all-- The front half can wrap mostly around your body, and the back half can be tied up around the waist.
