I'm not a military guy, but my friend used to be a sergeant airborne ranger, he shared with me his philosophy. On long trips, he required his team to brush their teeth every night and in the morning. His reasoning is that when people are under prolonged physical stress, low morale can lead to sloppy work, accidents and preventable injury.
When his guys took the 5 mins to brush their teeth and shave their face, it gave them a better minty breath and focus on doing a high standard quality and pride in their job.
When your breath is *really* bad, you know it, the other guys know it, which leads to people avoiding each other.
For the solo BPer, who doesn't feel good about himself because of bad hygiene, which under prolonged periods of stress can lead to mild depression, apathy then accidents.
Morale is zero grams.
