I've worn contacts now for about 35 years, starting with those hard little glass things.
Nowadays I have super comfy Frequency-55 soft contacts. I always hike in contacts. I think the big reason is that it allows me to wear really cool sunglasses (Native Hardrocks at the moment). I also don't find it a big deal to wash hands every night (liquid Bronners) and take contacts out/in in camp. It really isn't a big deal. Besides, carrying a contact lens case, back-up lenses, glasses, and some contact solution is a very small price to pay for being able to hike with 20/200 (with an atypical astigitism) vision. Heck, if natural selection were still a factor I would've been eaten by a mountain lion a long time ago with the eyes that I have.

I'm grateful for contacts and really don't like wearing glasses when I hike.

I used to wear glasses inside large ski goggles when touring.
But I fell over one too many cornices when the glasses fogged up.
Honest!

So now I use 1-day disposables. I wash up after cooking dinner, which leaves my hands very clean. I put the new contacts in the next morning - inside the tent, even in really foul weather.

Works for me.

I wear the throw away kind. I'll leave them in for a week or 2 at a time without any issues. I'll just carry a second set just in case. Been doing it for the last 14 years. Doc says eyes look fine.

I have one-day disposables as well, and love them, but I'm trying to switch away from them. I feel a bit guilty about the amount of trash it produces.

My wife and I wear disposables. We take them out every night at home, but we wear them for a month instead of a week. The prescription lasts for well over a year.

On the trail:

Short trips- sleep in them and bring rewetting drops for the morning.

Trips over two nights- take conditioner, cases, and glasses. remove at night

Man I hate glasses on the trail- Cant wear sunglasses, rain drops, fogging, hat bills, hoods, god forbid its cold out and you have exposed metal sitting on your face at 20*F- Cold

Or you would have been back at the cave, doing close work like flint knapping spear points for the hunters who were getting eaten!

I like the idea of one day disposables for hiking. The backup projection that provides is really good.

I'm a 50/50 contacts/glasses guy, but I normally wear glasses when hiking. If I wear contacts, I take my glasses anyways because it's easily possible to lose, tear or damage a contact. If I just take the glasses, then I don't need a case. If I bring contacts then I'm carrying glasses, glasses case, contacts case and contact solution.

With daily disposable contacts (or weekly and bring an extra pair) you wouldn't need back up glasses.

For solution, I use a small travel size bottle obviously, but I use the same one always and just keep refilling it. Squirt solution from a big bottle into a dish, and then vacuum up the amount needed with your smaller bottle.
