Has anyone used this thing? I'm going to order it, just to give it a try. And returnable if not! No idea what the weight is, but it can't be much.

Edit: also, puffy vests for 35 bucks. http://canvas.landsend.com/pp/mens-down-vest-~226861_-1.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::QY9&CM_MERCH=IDX_men-_-outerwear&origin=index

Underarm grommets might become very uncomfortable.

Lands End down vests on 01/22/2012 11:59:36 MST Print View

Good find. Every once in a while a manufacturer gets it right, like the New Balance Fugu jacket, etc. Lands End had a Primaloft jacket that wasn't the lightest, but the warmth to cost was great. If you are on a budget, you don't need to spend $100 on a windshirt, but you may pay a 3-4oz weight penalty. Many of the runner's brands like New Balance and Brooks make some nice wind shells that can be found in discount stores like Marshalls and Ross, and the thrift stores have them all the time.

The Land's End down vests are very usable, but don't have a super loft/weight ratio. Like the windshirts, you can get your kit together on a budget with a slight weight penalty. The "regular" Lands End site has a bunch on sale for $25. Check their "overstock" page for the deals. I see they have a bunch of polyester long johns too.

Eric, that's been my experience as well. I ordered both the military version of the Patagonia R1, and the Patagonia R1, and kept the military version. 90% of the R1 for 25 bucks? Why would I do anything else?
