Correct Pitch for SMD Wild Oasis on 01/21/2012 08:14:27 MST Print View

I just sold my Gatewood Cape and picked up a Wild Oasis off of Gear Swap. I really like the Wild Oasis, but I can't seem to get a tight pitch on the back of the shelter. My friend has one also and I've noticed the same problem with his. Any advice on how to get the rear of the shelter a little tighter? I have considered adding some extra tieouts midway up the rear of the shelter (much like the ones on the Gatewood Cape to attach the bug bivy). I am using the included carbon fiber pole that came with it. I think its about 44". I was also thinking about using a longer pole, pulling the beak closer to the ground and hopefully the rear will lift up some. Anybody have any advice?

I use my trekking pole. You may want to try different heights to see if that works better. I don't seem to have that problem. Did you check out the instructions on the Six Moon Designs website? http://www.sixmoondesigns.com/products/HT_WildOasis.pdf

I have a Wild Oasis that I love. I don't have an answer to your pitch problem but I have one of my own that may be related. There is one rear corner that always ends up much closer to the ground than the other. This results in a loss of head/foot room at that corner. I admit that I have not fiddled with it very much to identify the problem because it's not that big a deal but if someone has a solution I'm listening.

The Wild Oasis and the Gatewood Cape are identical save for the swap of a top vent for the hood. They pitch the same way.

A longer pole works better. I routinely use 46 inches, angled slightly so that by straightening it, I can tighten the canopy from inside when needed. I also have 24 inch lines on mine and added linelocks to the standard peg loops. I detest having to restake.

YMMV.
