So I have to be a member and I need to tell you what I'm going to pay forward, then wait for you to pass judgement on whether I'm worthy? Presumably this means that I need to have gear of approximately equal value.

You've got lots of good gear, and I'm sure the folks your giving it to appreciate it. I just think your method smacks of elitism and kills the spirit of true PIF.

Unfortunately, it's a trend here on BPL lately... Must post a PIF HERE on BPL. Must be a member. Must agree to PIF something of similar value. Must POST the next PIF before I'll send gear. Must make your PIF recipient agree to a 8 point PIF agreement to keep PIF going in perpetuity.

I've given away a lot of gear to a lot of folks simply because they needed it, both here and in the real world. Unfortunately, that means I just don't have much left to play at your level. This place is just too rich for me. Not sure how I even scraped up enough for membership.

Maybe I was a little harsh, and that post was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction. It's Thoms gear, and he's certainly free to dispose of it how he pleases. I really do appreciate the generosity. I've just never been a fan of conditional generosity (a.k.a. "the catch").

Maybe I'm just bitter because this is the third or fourth PIF I couldn't get in on because I'm one of the "have nots". Even in this case, I know a couple nice boys who I'm trying to keep active in scouting, and being able to augment their gear with good quality stuff really helps to keep them engaged. They could really use some of that gear. Unfortunately, they don't have anything to PIF but their time, effort, and spirit (and they do that in spades).

Good on you for sharing, Thom. As I said in the first one, I know the people you're giving it too will appreciate it (I see a few good names on that list).

I won't edit that first post. It was genuine sentiment at the time, and I'm not a fan of "cleaning up" original posts.
